Bad week to be a child

When I joined media in 2013 it was because it was the only job I could find. I will not lie  and, tell you I was oozing passion and would kill to work as a news anchor and reporter.I would be lying to you and above all my self. When I started out, it was about having a job that gave me a stable income and I in turn would learn all I can and give the job my best.A few months down the road, I started to love my job. Lets face it when you are reporting and talking about issues that matter it tags at your heart. ( I have been told emotions are a bad thing in this business). The more time I spend doing the news the more I enjoy it.I am more inclined towards social and community affairs stories, it’s not that politics is not exciting or sports is not exhilarating enough but there is a depth that comes with social and community issues. They are the things that affect our everyday lives.

Last week was  a horrible one for the children. We start at home with the maid from hell, Jolly Tumuhirwe. Everyone who watched the video was shocked, mothers cried, fathers were visibly somber. How you brutalize a child who can barely speak is beyond me. No, how you brutalize a minor like that goes against anything that makes you human. There have been arguments that maybe the maid was mistreated or so forth but even then it doesn’t call for what that child went through. You have traumatized that child and she will probably have enough trust issues for the rest of her life because things like that scar kids. Every potential friend of the child is going to have to work thrice as hard because you the adult abused her trust. The story is probably painful but it opened the debate on our total dependence on house-helps and the issue of  stay at home mums. I mean we had totally moved to being career women and letting the help raise our kids. Its interesting to see how this discussion will affect the new mothers to be, those considering staying home, treatment of house-helps, their pay and a host of other issues  the video sparked this week.

Ryan Ssemaganda . This poor child was run over  by a KCCA driver and unfortunately died due to severe injuries. There was a lot of public out roar at KCCA  when we heard that the child was denied the right to breastfed.  If you want us to remind you people in authority we will, it’s a child’s basic right to eat! The story then took an interesting twist. At first the mother was just crying over the loss of her child which resonated with everyone.  Then it became all about compensation  and politicians without shame like Erias Lukwago used this as a way to be relevant again. It took us away from the fact that a public institution was reckless, which was the primary issue and we started to concentrate on the greed displayed by the family.  The poor child’s body was disrespected with the constant carrying it to and fro in hopes of compensation. This  gave us a glimpse of what poverty has done to the common folk. We are using moments of tragedy to get as much as we possibly can. Also where was civil society in all this? Prominent lawyers who claim to be child activists? It left a soar taste in my mouth.

Still talking children. A thirty year old Australian dumped her week-old baby in a storm drain !!!!!! we were raving about the maid and then this happens!! http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-30172577

If you feel you cannot take care of a child, or even have the slightest doubt about your motherly instincts help us and use a condom. They are cheap, not affordable but CHEAP. If you go to a health centre they are given free ( that is if they are there, but the health care system is a discussion for another day.)You have a God  given right to enjoy your sexual exploits just do not get pregnant to give birth and then throw it away.

Remember the Chinese child that was thrown in a drainage some months ago this year? http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-22685445

We need to take responsibility for our sexual activities especially if you are above 18 years of age. You have no right throwing away a child when you couldn’t remember protection or the morning after-pill. Put up the child for adoption if you cannot afford to take care of the child. There are countless people dying to raise a child.

It goes without saying that these children are just the representatives of children going through unimaginable things.  Children being  defiled, dying of malnutrition because of senseless civil wars.Children being injured in rocket exchanges. http://edition.cnn.com/2014/07/17/world/meast/mideast-conflict-children/ We need to do more to protect our children. We need to be pro-active in making a society that is safe to raise children !!!!!
